The following is a step by step guide on how I filled my boxing bags for our boxing gym in Brisbane http://www.thetoughspot.com.au
A broom or stick to stuff material down the side of the bag
Rope to hang the bag up while stuffing
2 x strong plastic bags the size of a garbage bag (I used the plastic bag that the sand was in)
Sand approx 30 litres per bag (the cheapest and finest sand available, we bought the blue sand from Nuway)
Wheel barrow to mix the filling material (mixture) up with
Hay or sugar cane mulch (I used sugar cane mulch)
Duct tape
Shovel
Old rag to put under the bag if you don't want to damage it while filling
It will take approximately 1 hour to fill one bag properly.
Hang the bag up with the rope so you can easily fill it, see photo below
Mix the sand and hay together in the wheel barrow
Fill the plastic bag with the sand and hay, tape it up when full and put the plastic bag in the boxing bag, place it right in the middle of the boxing bag
Fill the space around the plastic bag you just put in the middle of the boxing bag with mulch or hay, or the mixture (I personally used the mixture on the outside as well), make sure you stuff it down properly filling up all empty spaces use the broom or stick to stuff the material down properly down the sides
Make sure you fill up the empty spaces in the bag to make it nice and evenly filled, see photos of empty space below
Kick and punch the bag a bit to get the filling in the right places, then put more stuffing in the bag to fill any remaining gaps
Fill the second plastic bag with the mixture, tape it up and place it in the middle of the boxing bag on top of the other plastic bag, this should fill your boxing bag almost till the top of the bag
Fill the space around the plastic bag you just put in the middle of the boxing bag with mulch or hay, or the mixture. Kick and punch the bag a bit to get the filling in the right places, then put more stuffing in the bag to fill any remaining gaps
Now fill up the rest of the bag, if you've been using the mixture of sand and hay to fill the bag around the plastic bags then I recommend to top the bag up with a good layer of sand, as the sand will move down the bag over time.
It takes quite a while to get your boxing bag filled, getting the material, preparation etc. but it is worth doing it, it gives you a sense of accomplishment, and you'll appreciate the boxing bag much more when you are punching it.
Not taking into consideration the time you invest, you're probably looking at $20 to $30 per bag.
This is just one way of filling up the bag, if you are after a lighter bag, use more rags with you filling mix
Every bag has a different maximum weight, please check yours before filling
Please let me know if you have any other suggestions or improvements for filling a boxing bag.
